It all started with a question…
But it’s probably not the question that you’ve got right now…
….what the hell is Lifefulness?
So let’s deal with that first.
Lifefulness comes from the underused word ‘Lifeful’, which the Oxford English Dictionary defines this way:
‘Lifeful - adjective: Full of life; having much vitality or animation; that which gives or bestows life or vitality’.
At its heart Lifefulness is a practice about filling your life with life.
About living your life fully.
About creating a life of vitality and aliveness.
It’s both a simple idea and a tried and tested, evidence-based methodology that has been put into practice across the world, in major corporations and even the NHS.
And it all started with a question…
15 years ago, I was standing in a Christmas Carol Service and thought there’s so much about this that I love - singing, community, joy, connection - I’m just not religious at all.
The question came to mind:
Could you create something like church that celebrates the one incredible thing we all have in common: life itself?
The First Lifefulness Communities
In 2013 with my friend and co-founder Pippa Evans (another comedian) I founded Sunday Assembly - a movement of non-religious congregations that celebrate life.
We found a way to adapt the techniques of the spiritual community and congregation so that everyone could get involved.
The communities were celebrating life, so Lifefulness seemed like the perfect word for the practice we developed.
The Lifefulness Project
The Lifefulness Project was set up so that anyone in the world could take part in Lifefulness - even if there wasn’t a Lifefulness community near you.
We started with connection and discussion groups because these gatherings are so powerful.
After running pilots in 2020 and early 2021 we’re now opening them up to everyone - including you!
Join Our Mission.
Small groups are also the ideal building blocks for our big mission: tackling the crisis in meaning and belonging.
Once there’s a critical mass of community members in your area, we will start in-person communities dedicated to connection and purpose.
Thanks for taking part!

Lifefulness does for spiritual community, what mindfulness did for Buddhist meditation.
Lifefulness is an approach that combines the techniques of spiritual communities, with evidence-based research, in a totally secular way.
